Ian started his legal career working in the legal department of a large local authority in England whilst studying for his law degree. Upon being awarded his LL.B Ian attended the Inns of Court School of Law in London and was called to the Bar of England and Wales in 1993.
He practised at the Bar at St. Ive’s Chambers in Birmingham before joining the Chambers of Stephen Hockman Q.C. and Peter Harrison Q.C. at 6 Pump Court, Temple London. Ian was appointed to the Attorney-General’s Panel of Prosecuting Advocates.
In 2006, Ian moved to the Republic of Ireland and was admitted to the Roll of Solicitors by the Law Society of Ireland. He was employed by LK Shields solicitors before becoming a consultant with the law firm of Maree Gallagher Associates.
Ian decided to start his own practice and Ian Thomas Associates was set up in March 2012.
We are a small, specialist firm providing legal, regulatory and compliance advice in our core areas of practice; food and beverages, health and safety, non-food consumer products including medicines and cosmetics and consumer protection.
Ian is experienced in advising different businesses and individuals ranging from multi-nationals to small and medium enterprises as well as to employees and sole traders. Ian has also advised the regulatory authorities on legal and regulatory issues which gives him a significant insight to how they operate.
Ian Thomas has provided advice to start-up companies, particularly in the food industry, on their legal and regulatory obligations.
Ian Thomas Associates also provides training in respect of regulatory compliance issues. Ian is an experienced speaker at seminars, conferences and at in-house advisory sessions. Ian has spoken at events in Ireland, the UK and Europe.
Ian has been listed in Chambers and Partners as a “leading junior” counsel in Consumer Law where he is referred to as “highly proficient” and “well-respected”.
Ian is a member of the Law Society of Ireland, the Dublin Solicitor’s Bar Association (DSBA), the Health and Safety Lawyers’ Association of Ireland (www.hslai.com), the Health and Safety lawyers’ Association (UK) (HSLA) and the Bar of England and Wales (non-practising). Ian is also involved with the Business Accountability and Responsibility Centre (BARC) at the University of Wales, Newport Business School.
