The Food Safety Authority of Ireland is currently undergoing a consultation process in respect of the list of food categories for the purposes of the new list of approved food additives.
Interested parties should make submissions by e-mail to consultation@fsai.ie or by post to Consultations, Food Safety Authority of Ireland, Abbey Court, Lower Abbey Street, Dublin 1 by the closing date of Friday, 22nd June 2012 at 5 pm.
The relevant legislation is Commission Regulation (EU) No 1129/2011 which amends Annex II to Regulation (EC) No 1333/2008 by establishing a Union list of food additives. The changes will apply from 1 June 2013.
The 5th recital to Regulation 1129/2011 states; “For reasons of clarity it is necessary to list food additives in groups of additives for authorisation for certain foods. Guidance should be provided to describe the different categories in order to ensure uniform interpretation.”
The FSAI consultation will help the Commission provide the necessary guidance to ensure the uniform application and interpretation of the new legislation throughout the Member States.
Details of the consultation can be found at www.fsai.ie/legislation/consultations_2012.html.
