Ian Thomas is a Visiting Professor attached to the Faculty of Life and Health Sciences based in the School of Biomedical Sciences at Ulster University’s Coleraine campus. In that capacity, he contributes to the teaching of food law modules to students studying food and veterinary regulatory affairs and human nutrition at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
On Monday, 17 April 2023, Ian delivered an on-campus lecture entitled “Introduction to Food Law”.
The lecture covered a broad range of food law related topics including the impact of Brexit in the United Kingdom and the EU on legal and regulatory matters, basic concepts such as hazard, risk, unsafe food, traceability, withdrawals and recalls, FBO obligations and mutual recognition.
Ian also discussed the main aims of food law; protecting consumers’ health and interests, food security, sustainability and providing healthy and nutritious food.
He wishes all students the best of luck with upcoming final exams and in their chosen future careers.
Ian looks forward to making further contributions to the above courses along with his colleague Visiting Professor Cliodhna McDonough.
