Take care at level crossings

A safety campaign aimed at raising public awareness of the dangers at level crossings was launched on 8th April 2013. The campaign is a joint initiative between the Road Safety Authority, Iarnrod Eireann and the Railway Safety Commission and is supported by an information booklet entitled ‘Safety at Level Crossings’.

Commenting on the new guidelines the Railway Safety Commissioner, Mr Gerald Beesley, highlighted the particular dangers of unattended railway crossings where the majority of ‘near misses’ occur. Mr Beesley stated that users of level crossing who fail to shut and fasten gates create a dangerous situation for road and railway users.
